In the sick bay

Most of the cycling press releases I’m receiving now are all about the Tour de France. In spite of the frenzy of soccer’s (or football’s for my Euro speaking brethren) World Cup, the world’s attention will swing to Rotterdam on July 3rd. With every press release announcing who is on the long squad for the Tour de France selection, there is another for a rider who had an impromptu yard sale on the descent of some mountain, knocking them out of contention for a couple of weeks. So with just a little over three weeks before a rider rolls off the prologue ramp, let’s check to see who has landed in the doctor’s office.

So far only one marquee rider has “come to grief” (another trademarked Phil Liggitt expression and paid royalties to use) so far. A rider who I have described in the past as the one-hit wonder of cycling, Carlos Sastre, has a herniated disk in the L5-S1. He buggered his back at the recent Giro on two separate crashes. I’m no doctor, but I know that’s a bad thing to have when racing for three weeks.
