It’s not all doom and gloom

Lately there has been a lot of doom and gloom in cycling. On the front pages of newspapers and websites we’ve had drug and mechanized scandals. To the casual observer this may seem to be all there is in cycling – drama and scandal of soap opera proportions. I look at Twitter and Facebook and see people sounding off on how corrupt our sport is. To be quite honest I’m sick of the oversimplification. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not sticking my head in the sand and ignoring the problems that are coming to light. However, I know there is change. There are young people out there training and being instructed by some of our nation’s best coaches. They are examples of how the sport is progressing.

Last week I was lucky enough to spend part of the day with Richard Dunn, coach and director of the southeast USA Cycling Development camp. The base of operations was Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. I sat down and spoke at length with Coach Dunn about what he hopes the riders will glean from their time at the camp.
