Lance Armstrong and the Tour of Luxembourg: Phase 1 complete
Lance Armstrong has called his season leading up to the Tour de France one filled with “speed bumps.” These bumps include illness in March which forced a last minute withdrawal from Milan-San Remo. In April Armstrong rode only one stage at the Circuit de la Sarthe before pulling out with a stomach illness which put a temporary halt to his early season campaign. Prior to the Amgen Tour of California, Armstrong – along with Levi Leipheimer, and Jason McCartney, raced under the Mellow Johnny’s banner at the Tour of the Gila, where Leipheimer repeated his success from 2009. After a hard but short block of racing in New Mexico, Armstrong and crew lined up at the Amgen Tour of California. At a pre-race press conference in Sacramento Armstrong responded to a question about his fitness, “I’m not pulling the fire alarm, but the signs need to start pointing up.”
As we all know California didn’t go the way the Texan wanted – ex-teammate Floyd Landis accused him and several ex-teammates from the Postal Service Tour de France squad of doping. Then to top off a bad day, Armstrong went down in a crash on that stage (Visalia to Bakersfield) forcing him to withdraw from the race. Now might have been the time to pull the red fire alarm lever.
