Super secret training for the Tour de France
In just over four weeks the biggest stage race of the season the Tour de France, also known as Le Tour to friends, kicks off in the city of Rotterdam. The opening salvo of the Tour is a short eight kilometer prologue through the downtown streets of this port city. However, before one pedal stroke is turned in anger (that phase is trademarked by Liggett, so don’t even think of using it without permission) there is the usual pre-race training camps and tune-up races that the favorites attend to fine tune their fitness or determine where they stack up against the competition.
The defending champion and odds on favorite, Astana’s Alberto Contador, took a bit of a break after the Classics. Quiet and reserved, the Spaniard hasn’t been involved in any unnecessary distractions and I’m sure during the Giro d’ Italia he was keeping close tabs on his potential Italian rivals. While the Giro riders were recovering from the toughest edition of Italy’s most important stage race, Contador packed his bags for a four-day training camp in the Pyrenees to check out stages 14 through 17. In tow were seven of his Astana teammates who obviously made the short list for the Tour squad.
