Musical Chairs With Alberto Contador
A press release sent by the Team Astana management used a phrase that was as obvious as Andy Schleck’s attack on the Col du Tourmalet.
“Alberto Contador no longer wishes to ride for the Astana team with whom he won two Tours de France, the Giro d’Italia and Tour Spain. For three years, the sponsor of Kazakhstan has offered him the best working conditions to enrich his record.”
Breaking up is so hard to do, just ask Mel Gibson. And like a raging Mel, Astana can’t help but throw in a sentence about how Contador’s best years were with Astana–just without the stream of curse words. But they still, “respect his choice, and wish him good luck.” Yeah, sure they do.
It’s been no surprise that Contador has been courted by every team with a general classification dream. At the beginning of this season El Pistolero looked to be taking his fingerbanging-salute skills to Quick Step. However, his Astana contract prevented that from happening, so team manager Patrick Lefevere is rumored to be sniffing around like a cat in heat once again for Contador.
There was also talk that the three-time Tour de France winner might go to Garmin-Transitions. Word on the street is that Alberto has a thing for the co-sponsor’s burritos and Vaughter’s sense of style. However, the firm rumor that makes the most sense is Contador joining Bjarne Riis on his team next year, SunGard.
