Team Hotel San José heads into the 2010 season with a solid roster of riders and some promising newcomers who are ready to build on the success the team enjoyed in 2009.

The Austin, Texas-based professional team will field a multi-national roster of seven professional/elite riders to go along with five others who are part of the Team Hotel San José Under 23 Junior Development Program.

Headlining the pro squad is 2009 Athens Twilight Criterium winner Heath Blackgrove. The 29-year-old is coming off one of his best seasons, with victories at the Tour of Southland in his native country of New Zealand, the Mississippi Grand Prix, Texas Tough Grand Prix II and the Tour of Lawrence.

Team Hotel San José Executive Director Todd Reed said he will lean on Blackgrove, a ninth-year professional, to be a leader in a number of ways.

“We have built a developmental team around Heath and he will play a pivotal role when they are on the road,” Reed said. “Not only does he have the most experience, but he is also a terrific mentor for our younger riders and even the Team Hotel San José club members.”

Blackgrove said Team Hotel San José should be competitive in nearly every type of race. The squad has added strength for breakaways and hilly races, and boosted its speed for sprints and criteriums.

“While the extra strength will give us more options, I am very excited to work with the sprinters we have on board and setting them up for the bunch finishes,” Blackgrove said. “I really think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year and look forward to helping develop Team Hotel San José.”

One of the speedsters on the team is Carlos Vargas. The 27-year-old Columbian is the 2009 Texas state criterium champion who won two stages of the Mississippi Grand Prix on the way to finishing third overall. He is also a perennial podium placer at the International Cycling Classic (Superweek) series. Helping him in the lead-outs will be Australian strongman Sean Sullivan, 31, who won a stage of the Tour of Austin last year

Team Hotel San José has also bolstered its already talented line-up with the addition of several promising newcomers, including New Zealander Logan Hutchings, Cody Foster (a 19-year-old who was fourth in the junior men’s time trial at the 2009 USA Cycling championships), American Alex Battle-Woods and current Under 23 U.S. national team member Travis Burandt. Hutchings, 25, is new to the U.S. racing scene. He won two stages last year at the Tour of Southland and captured the Under 23 New Zealand national road and time trial titles in 2005.

Other notables on the roster include Joshua Carter (multi-stage winner at the International Cycling Classic), Ronnie Strange (2009 Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred criterium winner) and Stefan Rothe (Texas State Time Trial Champion 2009) of Germany.

In 2009, Team Hotel San José won 50 races and registered 95 podium (top three) placings, including victories at the Athens Twilight Criterium, the Texas Tough Grand Prix II, the Tour of Lawrence, the Mississippi Grand Prix, the Texas and Colorado state criterium championships and a sweep of the podium at the Tour of Austin.

Team Owner and Manager Barry Lee said the long-term vision for the team is to apply for continental license status in 2011. In the short-term, the development of juniors and Under 23 racers is a priority and has always been the program’s focus.

“This team is a complete package of what cycling can deliver on a number of levels: from grass roots events, to camps and clinics, to club and amateur developmental programs all the way up to the elite pro level,” Lee said. “We like being the underdog team at the larger races – because our guys thrive on winning and being the long-shots.”

The team’s management company, Redbud Sports, LLC, has a solid reputation in sporting events and operations. Redbud Sports manages the Team Hotel San José Cycling and Multi-Sport Club programs, the latter of which boasts more than 120 members. Redbud Sports also puts on Pace Bend Road Race, the largest annual road race in the State of Texas.

“We want to make a difference,” Lee said. “We have a large club, a large team, and high expectations of them both. They are required to volunteer and work at our events and in the community through camps and clinics, etc.”

Pro/Elite Roster
Alex Battle-Woods* (USA), Zach Bergh* (USA), Heath Blackgrove (NZL), Travis Burandt* (USA), Josh Carter (USA), Cody Foster* (USA), Logan Hutchings (NZL), Stefan Rothe (GER), Ronnie Strange, Sean Sullivan (AUS), (USA), Joseph Tokarski* (USA), Carlos Vargas (COL).

Team OUCH is now UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis

The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis returns a solid core of veterans to work with a strong new crop of young riders for the 2010 season.

“One of the things this organization has always done well, from day one, is to blend veteran professionals with younger riders into consistently strong teams,” said team directeur sportif Mike Tamayo. “The new group we have coming in has a lot of talent. When you put them together with guys like Rory (Sutherland), Tim (Johnson) and Chris (Baldwin), they not only have a chance to learn how to race from some of the best, most professional riders in the country, but also how to win.”

Leading the new group will be young sprinters Jake Keough and Eric Barlevav. At 22, Keough comes to the team from Kelly Benefits, for whom he put up strong results in 2009, including three stage wins at the Vuelta Ciclista del Uruguay. The 23-year-old Barlevav, in his first pro season with Mountain Khakis in 2009, showed that he was turning into a formidable sprinter, winning the finale of the USA Crit Series, while showing consistency throughout the year.

Tiny peek at UnitedHealthcare jersey courtesy @rorysutherland1

They’re joined by another young fast man, Jonny Clarke, who, despite just turning 25, has a wealth of experience at the pro level, particularly in his time racing with the South Australia-AIS squad. In 2007, he delivered a stage win in the Jayco Tour Down Under, and he’s shown that he’s more than capable of winning sprints or providing lead-outs.

“We’re excited about these three young guys,” Tamayo said. “Eric and Jake both have really good speed, and Jonny has a good sprint and is solid tactically. He’s still finding where he fits in with his talent, and we’re looking forward to shaping his career.”

UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis has also bolstered its stage-racing team with four additions to the squad, led by Morgan Schmitt, who comes to the program from Bissell. Schmitt, who turns 25 just after the New Year, will be entering his fourth season as a pro, and he’s been developing more each year.

“Morgan is a good all-around rider,” Tamayo noted. “He climbs well and time trials well. He’s just a big engine.”

He’ll be joined by another rising stage race star, Max Jenkins, who won the 2007 U23 Road Race National Championship. Jenkins, who just turned 23, spent the 2009 season racing predominantly in Europe with the Glud & Marstrand squad. However, he turned a few heads back in the states when he made the final selection at the U.S. Pro Road Race and finished 14th.

“He’s spent a lot of time racing in Europe the past few years,” Tamayo said, “and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in the U.S. with that experience.”

Matt Crane, now 24, returns to the organization after a year away. He rode for the squad in 2007 and 2008, and returns with his strong work ethic and time trialing skills.

Just short of his 26th birthday, Adrian Hegyvary joins UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis for his first season as a pro on the road, but the big rider has plenty of experience and success internationally on the track. Hegyvary brings another big engine to the squad, having finished 2nd in the 2009 U. S. elite national time trial championships. Proving he’s well-rounded, Hegyvary made his way onto the podium at the 2009 Athens Twilight Criterium. “Adrian is just super-strong,” said Tamayo. “He’s a lot like Roman Kilun.”

UnitedHealthcare will continue on Kuota bikes for 2010

Dutch rider Marc de Maar rounds out the new signings. De Maar, who turns 26 in February, rode for the Rabobank Pro Tour team for the last three years, and the Rabobank Continental team for two years prior to that, where he was a teammate of Rory Sutherland in 2004. He raced a number of prominent stage races in Europe the past few years, including finishing both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. De Maar comes off an injury-filled 2009, and is looking to return to form in the U.S. in 2010. “Marc is excited to give racing in the U.S. a go, and we’re excited to have him,” Tamayo added.

Veteran Core

United Healthcare Presented by Maxxis returns a core group of riders who have been critical to the team’s success the past three years. Leading the team once again will be 2007 and 2008 NRC Individual Points Champion Rory Sutherland. The soon-to-be 28-year-old has been one of the most consistently successful and reliable riders in North America the past three years. The Australian won the overall titles of the Nature Valley Grand Prix the past two years, and the Joe Martin Stage Race the past three. His success results from his versatility: he is a solid climber, strong time trialist and can put in a very good sprint, especially out of breaks. When the team needs a rider to step up, he has always been there with a top performance.

For stage races, Sutherland got help in the latter part of 2009 from Chris Baldwin, who returns to the team for 2010. He made an immediate impact last year, finishing 2nd overall at the Mt. Hood Classic. Baldwin, a two-time U.S. National Time Trial Champion, returns as a leader for climbing stage races like Hood and the Tour of Utah that take the riders to higher elevations.

The stage race squad returns two more strong workers, Kilun and Bradley White. Kilun enters his fifth season with the organization. His growing experience and ability to ride himself into the ground for his teammates have proven invaluable the past few years. Whi te, meanwhile, continued his aggressive riding in his second year as a pro in 2009. He could often be found in breaks, and earned Most Aggressive Rider status in stages of both the Amgen Tour of California and the Tour of Missouri.

Karl Menzies and Andrew Pinfold return for the criteriums and one-day races, as well as stage races like Nature Valley that call for a rider who can sprint and get over the climbs. Menzies, also entering his fifth year with the team, returned to form last year after an injury marred 2008, winning the sprinter’s competition of the Vuelta Mexico. Pinfold served the dual role of lead-out and lead man for numerous races in 2009, posting a stage win at the Vuelta Mexico and winning the overall title of the Tour de White Rock. He was a regular visitor to the podium in 2009, closing out the year with a 2nd place in the final stage of the Tour of Missouri.

Tim Johnson returns as road captain, following yet another stellar cyclocross season that saw him win his third elite national championship. Johnson has been a team leader for three years now, and applies his vast tactical knowledge like an extra directeur sportif.

“As a team, we have a huge amount of optimism for the 2010 season,” Johnson said. “We’re really set up well with the guys we have, with the motivation and support, to have one of the best seasons ever, not just in results but in the way we race. You need a group of guys you can trust to get the job done, and we have that.”

Fraser Returns

One other important addition to the organization is the return of Gord Fraser, who will be one of the team’s directeur sportifs. Fraser was a pillar of the team from its first year in 2003 until he retired after the 2006 season.

“I had a really good experience in 2009 in my first year of directing with Team Type 1, but it’s really great to come back to this program,” Fraser said. dquo;I have a lot of pride in having helped build this team from its beginning in 2003 into a national power. I’m looking forward to working with Karl and Tim again, and I’m really excited to be working with the young guys, especially Eric, Jake and Jonny, and turning them into top sprinters.”

In his career, Fraser racked up over 200 wins, went to the Olympics three times and won just about every major race in North America, as well as winning a stage of the Criterium International in France. Fraser not only brings this vast racing experience to the team, but also the knowledge of training and nutrition he’s built the past couple years as a coach with Carmichael Training Systems.

“My experience with CTS the past few years can also help guide our riders in 2010,” Fraser said. “I can also serve as a liaison with the riders’ coaches, coordinate training programs and make sure the riders are peaking at the right time for races.”

Above all, Fraser noted, “We have a great new sponsor, and I’m really looking forward to working with them to achieve their goals for the sponsorship, and help them further their mission of promoting healthy lifestyles. I’ve actually had UnitedHealthcare as my insurance provider through CTS the past couple years, so I have a first-hand knowledge of their great service. This is my chance to re-pay them a bit, too.”

The RadioShack squad isn’t the only big shiny new team for 2010. Team Sky has scooped up some strong British and European talent with the goal of putting a British rider on the Tour de France podium in five years. Their recent acquisition of Bradley Wiggins with a four year contract shows Sky is serious about reaching that goal. The monetary pay-off had to have been significant to get Wiggins out of his 2010 contract with Garmin. In the end it just would have been a messy legal battle that only would have prolonged his departure to Sky, created more tension within the team, and would have only benefited the lawyers. Garmin-Transitions is putting up a brave face and are sure they have a strong squad to contest the Tour. Rest assured, Team Sky manager David Brailsford isn’t going to get any karma points by poaching a rider that was still under contract. At this point cycling is a free market and contracts can and will be broken if enough Euro is splashed around.

January 4th Sky will unveil the complete team kit. The question remains to the loyal argyle fans who cheered for him during the Tour - are you Team Wiggins or Team Garmin-Transitions?

Rahsaan Bahati has had a busy off-season. Without a contract for 2010, Bahati was contemplating retirement. He started a sports management company which then morphed into an opportunity to start the Bahati Foundation whose mission is to help inner city kids have an opportunity for a better life. The foundation had been a dream of his for several years and now was the opportunity to put that dream into action.

In conjunction with the Bahati Foundation, Rahsaan founded the Bahati Foundation Professional Racing Team. This brand new team for 2010 is a registered UCI Continental squad looking to contest all the major American races, including the Tour of California. To bring his story to the masses, Bahati has partnered with Endure Media Group for a television series called, “Bahati, Out of Compton”, to document his rise from Compton to becoming an elite road racer. The program will follow the Bahati Foundation team through the 2010 racing season and will be broadcast this Fall on the Universal Sports channel. Bahati will also be lighting up the social media outlets to keep people informed.

In the very near future the Bahati Foundation will formally announce all the details of the program. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek and there are some significant companies involved. I’m always glad to see another professional cycling team come onto the racing scene, but one with such a good cause like Bahati’s makes it all the better.

The Kelly Benefit Strategies team has been a greenhouse for young talent. Team manager Jaime Carney discovered Matt Busche who had an impressive 2009 season. For 2010 Busche made the leap to the “big show” with the new RadioShack team. With the 2010 season nearly upon us, what is the next great talent on the Kelly Benefit team? Beyond the young talent the Carney seems to find every year is the return of the veterans: Neil Shirley, Andrew Bajadali and Alex Candelario. Any of these riders can and have taken victory in the past. Their season will include domestic racing as well as a European and Asian campaign. Hopefully we can expect to see them at the 2010 Amgen Tour of California.

PRESS RELEASE

The Kelly Benefit Strategies Pro Cycling team has announced their 2010 season roster, which sees 10 returning riders and four new additions. The team will enter the 2010 season with a line-up that includes experience, added horsepower and young talent.

“Our 2010 roster will be our strongest yet. We have retained the majority of our team that delivered so many great results in 2009 and also added more power, experience and young talent.” Said Jonas Carney, KBS Performance Director.

“Last season we won road races, stage races, criteriums and time trials at the UCI and NRC level. In 2010 we will be more versatile and have even more depth while fielding a roster that consists of all North American athletes.”

Jesse Anthony joins KBS from Team Type 1 and is best known for his cyclocross skills. He is a seven-time national champion in the cyclocross discipline. Ian Macgregor also joins KBS from Team Type 1 and is a two-time U23 National Road Champion with strength in tackling climbing stages. Alex Boyd comes from Rock Racing and was the 2007 Collegiate National Road Race Champion. Guy East joins KBS from Trek-Livestrong. East’s strengths lie in time trialing and track racing.

“In planning for the 2010 season, we wanted to continue progressing without taking any shortcuts. Our philosophy has always been to build a team, not buy one superstar.” Said Carney. “Having said that, we could not be more pleased with our new additions. I am very familiar with each of these guys and their potential. Our team environment tends to bring out the best in the athletes and I expect these four additions to surprise a lot of people.”

KBS racing saw great success during the 2009 season as the highest ranked non-ProTour team on the USA Cycling Professional Tour (coming in at 5th place) and the highest ranked North American Team on the UCI America Tour (3rd place). KBS also won three international UCI stage races including the Tour of Thailand, the Vuelta Ciclista del Uruguay, and the Tour de Beauce.

Riders from the KBS team made appearances on the podium in 2009 at the USPRO Time Trial and Road Race Championships and won four NRC events, which included the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, the Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium, the Wilmington Grand Prix and The Tour de Winghaven.

In the 2010 season the team will work to expand its international schedule, making a return to Asia in the early season for several races including the OCBC Cycle Singapore and the Tour of Thailand. KBS will also make two trips to Europe, once in the spring to prepare for the Tour of California and again in the summer.

In 2009, Team Type 1 won 55 races, finished fourth in the National Racing Calendar (NRC) standings and captured the King of the Mountains title at five races, including the Tour of Missouri. In two seasons, the squad has registered 100 victories and 219 podium (top three) finishes.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Team Type 1 is the world’s only professional cycling team with a roster that includes riders who have Type 1 diabetes. Established in 2004 by Phil Southerland and Joe Eldridge, the team strives to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes.

Southerland said the team’s previous success paves the way for an expanded racing calendar in 2010 that will include competition in North and South America, as well as Europe, Asia and Africa.

“We have had two great years with a great group of guys,” Southerland said. “The beauty of our team is the impact we have. With this roster, we hope to leave a long-lasting – and winning – impression on people around the globe.”

Southerland said the support of sponsors and a strong group of riders has the team on target to achieve its long-term goal of competing in the Tour de France by 2012.

“The notoriety Team Type 1 has garnered has allowed us to partner with great companies, as well as the International Diabetes Federation, with the goal of providing insulin to the 70,000 people in need of it around the world,” he said.

Southerland will continue as the team’s Chief Executive Officer but not compete professionally after being sidelined much of the past two seasons by a leg injury. The second-year pro competed in the Amgen Tour of California in 2009 and was part of Team Type 1’s winning eight-person team in the Race Across America (RAAM) in 2006 and 2007.

Team Type 1’s roster for 2010 includes a strong mix of veterans (Michael Creed, Valeriy Kobzarenko, Shawn Milne), sprinters (Eldridge, Ken Hanson and Aldo Ino Ilesic), stage racing specialists (Chris Jones and Davide Frattini), European talent (Javier Megias, Thomas Rabou and Martijn Verschoor) and an abundance of promising newcomers (Will Dugan, Alexey Shmidt, Thomas Soladay and Scott Stewart).

Four of the 17 riders have Type 1 diabetes: Fabio Calabria, Eldridge, Megias and Verschoor. In addition to nine Americans, there are riders from Australia, Holland, Italy, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and the Ukraine (see complete roster below).

Vassili Davidenko returns for his second season as the team’s director sportif. He will be assisted by Michael Carter.
